Internally Displaced Landscape is a project about changing relationships with the environment in wartime, exploring the connection between people and places and the mechanisms through which it arises and is maintained. The full-scale Russian invasion made it impossible to hold Borderland Space at its original location in 2022 and 2023. The symposium’s name is significant, as Mohrytsia lies on the border with Russia.

Artists who attended the symposium annually temporarily lost the opportunity to visit and engage with the landscape—as well as with one another in the format of a large residency. The landscape, once a space for work and dialogue, became a space of danger and shared loss.

In an effort to support one another, maintain communication, and sustain the continuity of the project, permanent residents of Borderland Space decided to temporarily transfer the creation of land art projects from the border area of the village of Mohrytsia to the cities in which they currently reside. The project united Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Lviv, aiming to trace how the landscape and perceptions of it change depending on whether it is safe or threatened, accessible or inaccessible, or destroyed.

How is the perception of land, damaged by war, transformed, and what possibilities exist for its restoration? The discussion also addressed experiences of displacement and their impact on artistic practices.
